Thai Food Etiquette Table Manners

thai food etiquette how to eat on table

In Thailand, we have a lot of common Thai etiquette table manners with the West like don’t talk with your mouth full of food but they’re some differences such as eating utensils, sharing food in family style etc.

Thai food is already cut into small pieces so you can just use a spoon and a folk by put the food onto a spoon in the right hand manipulated by a fork in the left hand and then put a spoon in your mouth.

For noodles soup, instead of spoon and folk, you can also use chopsticks to eat noodles and other things on a short flat bottom spoon put in your mouth. Thai people don’t make noises while we eat noodles and soup unlike in Japan which is the louder noise means more delicious.

For sticky rice, we eat by hand making a small ball scoop together with food and then put in your mouth.

If you’re eating with a group of people in family style which sharing a bunch of different dishes on the table. We usually have a short flat bottom spoon as a serving spoon in every dish. You can use that serving spoon to put food onto your plate and then use your a big fork and spoon to eat.

The other Thai etiquette table manners that good to know is don’t use a toothpick without covering your mouth with your other hand.

had a northern Thai cooking class today. I learned so much in the three hours. I was in the kitchen. We made individual courses and then sat down to eat straight away. I was stuffed, but couldn't resist finishing every dish. Arm, The instructor, is very talented and certainly knows his way around the kitchen. He was very patient and showed me lots of different techniques. Probably one of the best cooking classes I've ever done

We were keen to do a cookery course whilst in Chiang Mai. After looking at reviews we chose Arm's Small House. This was a great choice. Arm picked us up from our hotel and we picked up another couple before visiting the city's food market. Once our shopping of fresh ingredients was done we headed back to Arm's place where we were gently guided through 5 dishes, each preparing and cooking our own food. A wonderful experience. Thank you Arm.

We had an amazing time! Arm took us to the market and explained all intricacies of thai ingredients, then we went to his house to cook. Very intimate experience as it’s max for 4 people, we learnt a lot and loved our time! Arm even gave us a cook book afterwards and shared many recommendations of places to see around

Arm was so great! We had a blast learning about the local produce at the market and how things were processed for cooking/consumption. He was very knowledgeable and willing to answer any/all questions we had about food and anything in general. The cooking was simple yet comprehensive and all our dishes turned out well, hopefully we'll be able to bring some of the great tastes of Thailand home with us! Arm's cookbook as a bonus!I was also very impressed he spoke very good English and seemed to know Japanese well.It was also quite nice he picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel.
